About the workshop...
The workshop is located on the first floor of Ritz Music (within the same space
as our guitar showroom) and is run by
Dave Mason. Dave is a seasoned guitar technician of over 15 years experience; as
well as being a professional player
and also one of the busiest guitar teachers in this area of SW London!
Some common guitar repair & maintenance jobs.....
- String changing...... A guitar with very old strings will not only have lost
much of its sound but can also become very difficult to play as old strings
change in composition and start pulling harder on the neck, resulting in a poor
playing action. Whilst changing strings we will at the same time clean up the
fret board and give your guitar a general checkover......Price £15-00 + strings
- Set up/action adjustment...... Most guitarists (and certainly all beginners)
will prefer a guitar that has an easy playing 'action' ...we can 'set up' your
instrument for optimal performance, so that the strings are low enough
for comfortable playing whilst still being high enough to avoid buzzing on the
frets. this is probably one of the commonest tasks we undertake and can totally
transform how your guitar feels to play......Price from £25-00
- Fret work...... Older or heavily-used guitars develop grooves in some or all of
the frets. In milder cases, a light 'stoning' will give a new lease of life and
allow for a much lower playing action to be achieved without unwanted buzzing
(also known as 'fretting out'). In severe cases, a total re-fret is required
which we can undertake here in
The workshops.........................Price for total re-fret from £195-00
- Neck fracture repair...... Accidents will happen and we regularly receive
guitars with completely snapped or
fractured necks. Although this is obviously distressing, in nearly all cases a
totally satisfactory (and immensely
strong) repair can be carried out - indeed Dave Mason has now done countless
neck and headstock fracture repairs on all types of guitar for amateurs and
touring professional players alike......Price from £120-00
- Electronic repairs...... We carry out range of electronic repairs, from
simple problems with input sockets to
complete re-wires, so if your guitar has become noisy or has intermittent
problems, come and see us. £ Call
- Pickup fitting & replacement....... We fit replacement and up-grade pickups to
electric guitars, and can also convert your acoustic guitar to an
electro-acoustic - this involves fitting a high quality under-saddle transducer,
re-cutting the saddle and re-setting the playing action of the guitar to the
player's specification. If you own a high
quality acoustic and would prefer a non-invasive approach (ie no holes cut in
the side of the body for a pre-amp)
then this is a recommended option as these pickups are passive (no on-board
batteries are required) £ Call
- Nut/Saddle replacement...... If your saddle and/or nut has cracked we can
replace them with either the standard plastic ones or with those made from
superior materials like 'Tusq'.... this is a high quality synthetic version of
natural ivory which can improve volume & sustain considerably. £ Call
