If you have a guitar which needs attention, our workshops are here to help! Whether it’s simply string replacement, adjusting string height/playing action, structural repairs, electronic work, customization or complete restoration we will get your guitar into perfect playing order. We are also more than happy to help if you just want to pop in for guitar-related advice of any kind.
Putney Workshop …Our guitar repairer is Dave Mason and the workshop is located on the first floor of our Putney Shop at 3a Lacy rd, London SW15 1NH.
Richmond workshop…Our guitar repairer is Martin Hoj and the workshop is located at the rear of our Richmond shop at 21 Sheen road, Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, TW9 1AD.
String Changing – A guitar with very old strings will not only have lost much of its sound but can also become very difficult to play as old strings change in composition and start pulling harder on the neck, resulting in a poor playing action. Whilst changing strings we will at the same time clean up the fret board and give your guitar a general checkover.
Set-Up/Action Adjustment – Most guitarists (and certainly all beginners) will prefer a guitar that has an easy playing ‘action’ …we can ‘set up’ your instrument for optimal performance, so that the strings are low enough for comfortable playing whilst still being high enough to avoid buzzing on the frets. this is probably one of the commonest tasks we undertake and can totally transform how your guitar feels to play.
Fret Work – Older, or heavily played guitars, develop grooves in some or all of the frets. In milder cases, a light ‘stoning’ will give a new lease of life and allow for a much lower playing action to be achieved without unwanted buzzing (also known as ‘fretting out’). In severe cases, a total re-fret is required which we can undertake here in The Workshops.
Neck Fracture Repair – Accidents will happen and we regularly receive guitars with completely snapped or fractured necks. Although this is obviously distressing, in nearly all cases a totally satisfactory (and immensely strong) repair can be carried out – indeed Dave Mason has now done countless neck and headstock fracture repairs on all types of guitar for amateurs and touring professional players alike.
